Limberlost – Robbie Arnott

I start by admitting that I went to my book club meeting after reading only 74 pages—life kept getting in the way—but the other members urged me to finish the book and develop my opinion, even though I’d heard theirs.

My review expresses mixed feelings about Limberlost. I enjoyed the sense of place, the wonderful natural descriptions, and the simple premise, but I had difficulty with some of the character depth, and the timelines seemed confusing (a little once you go used to it).

I didn’t enjoy Limberlost as much as I’d hoped.

The glowing five-star reviews raised the book club’s expectations and mine, but it just did not do it for me.

What worked for me?

I found the vivid Tasmanian setting beautifully rendered, and the characters interesting if underdeveloped. However, by the end, I didn’t feel the emotional highlights of Ned’s life that the author intended. The story I like but didn’t love it.

I like it was a short novel and easy to read but found nothing that lifted me – I just could not connect emotionally with the characters. Maybe it was me.

This review is not to discourage future readers of Limberlost just to say go in eyes wide open and hopefully you will see more than I did.
