Reading Molly Schmidt’s novel ‘Salt River Road’ I was not sure on what to expect from the title, but the back cover proved interesting, so I gave it a go.

This book delved into the depths of grief, blending poetry and prose to create a different type of narrative I am used too.

I like how the author presented the Noonyan people’s historical losses in tandem with a family’s personal grief is both perceptive and moving.

The mixture of poetry and narrative took me by surprise and while I found the first half to be especially strong, the later parts of the novel just did not have much of an effect on me. I blame this on me being a male.

Nevertheless, this is an expressive work from an able author, and I hope my review does not deter anyone else from exploring this book and any of her future works.

P.S. I didn’t buy this book—I borrowed it from my local library. If you can not find it at your local library, buy it.

You won’t regret it!
