What an incredible story based on true life events. In this novel we meet Agnes who has been found guilty of murdering her lover and has been condemned to death. While she is awaiting her date for execution she is sent to work out her waiting days working on a farm. It’s while she us here she takes Toti (the minister she has chosen to prepare her to meet her maker) into her confidence and we learn of what brought Agnes to this point in time. I was fascinated with Agnes’s story and she has stated with me long after the book was finished. We also learn of some of the culture of Iceland and what life was like in the 1800’s. I have recommended to so many people. Hannah studied Agnes over a 10-year period and wrote her PHD on her, and you can tell. In this book, Hannah gives Agnes a voice, albeit a haunting one. Fantastic.
