This is the third book in the Wizards of Once series. As a reader who’d not read the first two, l had to come into the story without understanding the character’s links to each other.
The narrator was helpful throughout the journey. The world of long ago was filled with Warriors, Wizards, and Witches. The main characters are a boy and a girl.
The boy called Xar, is a Wizard boy, with no magic except for the witch magic on his hand that he accidentally received, and he has trouble controlling this magic. The girl, Wish, is a Warrior and has a magic eye and an ability to control iron. She has charming creatures, along with her sprites, a fork, spoon who travel with her and help her in their quest.
This was detailed in previous books in the Wizards of Once Series, with further explanation. The boy and girl were in love in a previous life and now they were gathering the ingredients of a magic spell to rid the world of witches. This will cure the curse upon them and allow them to live a normal life.
When they reach The School for Gifted Wizards they learn many skills to help them achieve their goal. To get inside they Knock Three Times. Once they go inside Perdita, who runs the school, is reunited with her brother, the Bear. Xar’s bodyguard, Bodkin, has a bad habit of falling asleep when things get scary. This isn’t very helpful. Will he learn the courage he needs to become a Hero?
They must collect the last ingredients, using courage they didn’t know they had. Will they survive to escape, yet again from their overprotective parents?
