WORLD BOOK REVIEWS
Let’s Write Your Review
Writing a book review is about more than just summarizing a plot; it’s about providing a roadmap for other readers to decide if the journey is worth their time. Whether you’re writing for a blog, a newsletter, or a retail site, a structured approach helps keep your thoughts organised.
Before you type, take a moment to reflect on the experience of reading the book.
Identify the genre: Is it a cozy mystery, hard science fiction, or a self-help guide? Your review should be framed within the expectations of that genre.
Check your notes: If you highlighted passages or noted a particular emotional reaction to a chapter, keep those handy.
The “One-Sentence” Test: Try to describe the book’s core premise in a single sentence. If you can’t, the summary might become too wordy.
The Structure of a Review
A. The Hook and Header
Start with the basics: Title, Author, and Genre. Follow this with a “hook”—a sentence that captures your overall feeling.
Example: “A gripping look at a future that feels uncomfortably close to home.”
B. The Summary (Spoiler-Free!)
Briefly outline the setup. Focus on the “Who, What, and Where.”
Who is the protagonist?
What is the central conflict or goal?
Where does it take place?
Rule of Thumb: Keep the summary to about 20% of your total review.
C. The Analysis (The “Meat”)
This is the most important part. Don’t just say you liked it; explain why.
Characters: Were they relatable? Did they grow?
Pacing: Did it fly by, or were there sections that felt like a slog?
Writing Style: Was the prose poetic and descriptive, or lean and action-oriented?
Themes: Did the book make you think about a specific topic (e.g., grief, courage, or technology) in a new way
D. The Conclusion and Rating
Summarise your final thoughts. To whom would you recommend this?
